Webb Bridge Middle School

As part of Digital Learning Day, all Webb Bridge Middle School students received a flyer during their advisement period outlining online resources for research, multimedia projects, and additional study (http://sdrv.ms/105aJvz).  A response survey on these resources, along with links to the sites, was posted on the Webb Bridge Media Center wiki at http://webbbmsmediacenter.wikispaces.com/Digital+Learning+Day+2013

To qualify for the prizes for participation in the contest, students were asked to visit online resources and give meaningful responses to the survey questions.  To allow time for this, the survey was active until Tuesday, February 12th. The advisement class with the highest participation (Mrs. Nora Manganelli’s 6th grade math class) won a donut party and Target gift card prizes were awarded to an individual student at each grade level (selected randomly) as well.

Mimosa Elementary School


Digital Learning Day was a huge success for Mimosa Elementary as teachers integrated technology such as Activotes, Brightlinks Interactive Projectors, and iPads to enhance student learning.  In the media center, students in Kindergarten used the Brightlinks to sequence pictures and learn about hibernation, and fourth graders used one of the school’s two iPad carts to conduct research on the Revolutionary War using information from Galileo. 

Hembree Springs Elementary School


Hembree Springs loves to use technology & we celebrated Digital Learning Day throughout the entire building! Kindergarteners got a lesson in how to use the catalog in the Media Center.  Second graders worked in the Media Center as “helpers”, and used our software to check in and check out books to other students. ActivBoards were utilized in many classrooms --  first grade used them during math, and third grade used them during science. Our fourth grade students spent a block in the computer lab learning typing skills, and fifth graders utilized ActiVotes for a fun classroom activity. Although technology is a big part of every day here at Hembree Springs, we enjoyed having a special day to recognize how important (and fun!) it is to use technology.

Birmingham Falls Elementary


We are displaying pictures of students using technology  at www.birminghamfalls.com. We will also be highlighting several technology projects completed in the media center and in the classrooms on our morning news program. Some of the projects we have been working on include: creating a Blabberize character that discusses the character’s viewpoint on the American Revolution, writing a book review and converting it to a QR code, setting up a QR code scanning station in the Media Center, creating and videotaping commercials trying to persuade the audience to buy a product, and writing and performing a song about the different types of rocks.

A  technology workshop for teachers on how to use GALILEO and NetTrekker will be offered by the media specialist.

Banneker High School


At Banneker, we signed up students for Destiny Accounts and showed them how to access the e-book catalog in or outside of the school. We also played with the various features available on Folletshelf, such as word search, highlighting, and note taking. I also touted AFPLS tutor.com.



Centennial High School


Students participated in a scavenger hunt which required them to make use of e-books, databases, read QR codes, and use of other Web 2.0 tools.

Students from science classes came to the media center for a demonstration on building apps.  After the demonstration the students worked on building apps for their genetic disorder research projects.

Renaissance Middle School


Renaissance Middle School TAG and ESOL students participated in Digital Learning Day with Destiny username/password creations, checking out ebooks to read in the media center and reserving books using Destiny.  Ebook introduction to students and teachers went extremely well today with no glitches.

Langston Hughes High School


Thanks to the teachers who shared their students with me today!

Here at Langston Hughes, I sponsored Writing Across the Curriculum. The students were given a story starter, “Darkness surrounded us like a coalmine during a blackout. Rain slashed at tree limbs, slicing through leaves and sending them fluttering toward the earth. We were  no longer sure where we were.”

Cogburn Woods Elementary School


All of our 4th and 5th grade students have created their individual “workspace” on Britannica Elementary (part of GALILEO Database)and are using this database and their workspace to research and store topics such as World War II, volcanoes, forces and motion, and the American Revolution at school and at home.  They are using the note-taking feature on this database to summarize what they are learning as well.

We are slowly getting our EBook collection together for you and your students to use. Teachers already have a Destiny Account, the user name is your last name and first initial. Your pw is your Barcode/SAP #. To access ebooks, go to Destiny, click on Log in and  use your user name and pw.

Students will have to create an account in Destiny. I have created a Screen Cast-O-Matic with Directions for students to do just that. It can be found at the School Website/Students/Media Center/ Destiny/Screen Cast-O-Matic.  We also have step by step instructions in PDF format to check ebooks in or out, Using your IPad/Android Device for ebooks, these documents are available on the School Website/Students/Media Center.

Digital Learning Day at Ridgeview Charter Middle School

The following digital learning activities are taking place in the Media Center today!

In conjunction with our Gilder-Lehrman Institute of American History exhibit, Looking at Lincoln:  Political Cartoons from the Civil War Era, I am working with 8th grade Social Studies classes on analyzing current political cartoons using digital issues of Junior Scholastic Magazine.  Students analyzed the cartoons using five questions and then looked for artists' tools such as analogy, hyperbole, irony, and symbolism used in the cartoon.

I also presented at the PTA Lunch and Learn on digital resources available to parents, teachers, and students, such as GALILEO, World Book Online, CultureGrams, NetTrekker, and GALE.

In sixth grade, we streamed a video introduction from Jackie Robinson's daughter, Sharon Robinson, to the Breaking Barriers essay contest.  Students then begain brainstorming about their own barriers for the essay.

One thing we are doing for Digital Learning Day….

The WAPR team is creating a power point that will run every morning.  Your students may submit a one page biography (with pics, transitions, etc) and the WAPR team will keep adding to the powerpoint daily.  I have flash drives if they need to use to transfer the page to WAPR.  The show starts tom. with a few of our talented students’ work.  Be sure to tune in.

P>S>  Instead, you could also do one page as a classroom.  It might be a good way to show the kids some cool things that Power point can do.

Elkins Pointe Middle School

We have 6th grade classes coming in to the media center for an eBook Extravaganza! Our ESOL students will go online to look at our Capstone Digital Library in which the books can be read to the student to help increase English language skills and comprehension. Other students will be looking at our eBooks through Destiny, Destiny Quest, and Follett Shelf. We will be using the 16 desktop computers in the media center as well as the mobile laptop cart so that all visitors can create Destiny accounts and go online to explore our new eBooks!
We are also doing a school wide QR Code Treasure Hunt. Nine different QR Codes have been placed in random spots around the building for students who have BYOD permission to scan and visit pre-selected sites. Students who scan, find, and note at least 6 different sites can come to the media center for a treat.
I also found a Periodical Table that has QR codes on each of the elements. Our science teacher is going to allow BYOD students to scan elements and find out new information about them.
Finally, we are using our "Student Voice Wall" to allow students to share apps with each other. The wall is titled "Have a 'Appy Week" and students are drawing the icons of their favorite apps on the wall to share with other students. Photo to follow!
